GPT-5.5 Is Gone from ChatGPT and Codex: What's Left and What It Costs

OpenAI retired GPT-5.5 from ChatGPT and Codex on Oct 14. Plan prices are unchanged and the API isn't affected. Here's what that means for you.

TL;DR

  • GPT-5.5 is retired from ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex on every plan as of October 14, 2026. The OpenAI API isn’t affected (Codex pricing).
  • The pricing page doesn’t name a single replacement for GPT-5.5. It points to OpenAI’s GPT-5.5 retirement guide for migration, and it lists GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna as the models on the paid plans.
  • Plan prices haven’t changed: Free $0, Go $8/mo, Plus $20/mo, and Pro at $100, $200 or $500/mo.
  • If you have scripts or CI jobs that call GPT-5.5 through an API key, they keep working.

OpenAI quietly pulled GPT-5.5 from ChatGPT and Codex today. No farewell tour, no goodbye email. Just gone, like your favorite snack after a “recipe update.” The good news: your plan price didn’t move, and the API still has it. The annoying part: OpenAI won’t say what replaces it.

What changed today

OpenAI’s Codex pricing page states it plainly: “GPT-5.5 retires from ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex on all plans on October 14, 2026. The OpenAI API isn’t affected.”

So there are two groups of users. If you pick models inside ChatGPT or the Codex app, GPT-5.5 is no longer in the list. If you reach Codex with an API key, which is common in CI and shared machines, nothing changes, because model availability follows whatever API models your key can use.

What replaces it? Great question. OpenAI would also like you to stop asking it. The page doesn’t name one model. It sends readers to OpenAI’s GPT-5.5 retirement guide and its GPT-6.1 Sol model guidance. Until OpenAI names a replacement, we won’t name one either.

Retiring a model on every plan the same day, without naming its replacement on the pricing page, leaves paying users to work out the migration themselves.

ChatGPT Work and Codex share one usage pool. Work runs on the same pricing, credits and limits as Codex.

How far $20 goes now

OpenAI publishes rough estimates of how many local messages Plus and Standard Business users get every five hours. The ranges are wide on purpose, because the size of your codebase, reasoning and tool calls all change the cost of each message.

ModelLocal messages per 5 hours (Plus)
GPT-6 Astra5–45
GPT-6.1 Sol15–160
GPT-6 Sol15–150
GPT-6 Luna350–3,000

Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit. Cloud tasks can use more of your allowance than local messages, and Fast mode uses 2.5x your included usage.

The practical move: use GPT-6 Luna for routine edits, since its range is about 20 times higher, and save GPT-6.1 Sol for work that needs it.

If you paid in credits

For credit-based plans, here’s what GPT-5.5 cost next to the models still available, in credits per million tokens at Standard speed:

ModelInputCached inputOutput
GPT-5.5 (retired in ChatGPT/Codex)12512.5750
GPT-5.6 Sol10010500
GPT-6.1 Sol502.5250
GPT-6 Luna2.50.2512.5

Plot twist, and a happy one for once: on these rates, GPT-6.1 Sol costs less than GPT-5.5 per token: 50 vs 125 credits for input and 250 vs 750 for output. OpenAI also notes that GPT-5.6 Sol has promotional pricing at least through November 21, 2026.

When you hit the limit

  • Plus and Pro: buy extra ChatGPT credits and keep working, without changing plans.
  • Business, Edu and Enterprise with flexible pricing: buy more workspace credits.
  • Anyone: run extra local chats with an API key, billed at standard API rates.

If you hit the limit partway through a turn, the agent can still finish that turn, within fair-use limits.

FAQ

Is GPT-5.5 still available in the API? Yes. OpenAI says the API isn’t affected.

Did ChatGPT Plus get more expensive? No. Plus is still $20/month on OpenAI’s pricing page.

What model should I use instead? OpenAI points to its GPT-5.5 retirement guide and doesn’t name one replacement on the pricing page. GPT-6.1 Sol is the top general model listed for Plus and costs fewer credits per token than GPT-5.5 did.
